Thousands gather for historic evangelistic festival in Malawi

Thousands of people have gathered in the Malawian capital of Lilongwe last weekend for a two day evangelistic festival which represented the culmination of a three week nationwide campaign to share the Gospel.

Led by evangelist Andrew Palau, the Love Malawi campaign involved more than 900 churches from across the country, and, said the Luis Palau Association in a statement, saw almost 20,000 people record a decision to follow Christ.

Mallison Ndau, Malawi’s Minister of Transport and Public Works, was instrumental in bringing the campaign to Malawi. He described it as a “dream come true”. “I am humbled to see this happen in Malawi,” he said in the statement. “We have been blessed.”

As well as the final two day event – which was held in a field adjacent to Lilongwe’s largest prison last weekend, major outreach events were also held in five other cities throughout Malawi. There was also a three day program of events – including sports, music and the sharing of the Gospel – in Lilongwe’s Dzaleka Refugee Camp, home to more than 20,000 refugees and asylum seekers who have come from various other nations in Africa.

One volunteer, Joseph Malambo, described the festival as “one of its kind”. “We have had crusades before, but this one…it is powerful,” he was quoted as saying in the statement released by the Luis Palau Association. “It is different. It has come at a proper time. At the end of it, we believe that God will bring about transformation for our country.”
