Thousands in Uganda and Australia bid farewell to ‘Mama’ Irene Gleeson

As many as 14,000 people reportedly gathered in the northern Ugandan town of Kitgum last week to bid farewell to Sydney grandmother Irene Gleeson.

Meanwhile Ms Gleeson, who died from cancer in Sydney on 21st July at the age of 68, was also farewelled at a service held in Sydney’s C3 Church Oxford Falls on Monday, attended by 900 family, friends and supporters.

A Christian, Ms Gleeson was the founder of the Irene Gleeson Foundation which she established after travelling to the area in 1991 and seeing the plight of widows and orphans there. The foundation has since provided everything from vocational education to food, water, shelter, medical care and counselling to thousands of children and youth affected by conflict in the region.
