FAMILY-FRIENDLY FILMS EARN MORE MONEY, SAYS REPORT FROM US ADVOCACY GROUP

10th February, 2016

Family-friendly movies earn more money, according to a report from US-based family-friendly film advocacy group Movieguide.

The organisation’s 2016 Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry found that the "most family-friendly" movies averaged more than $US73.01 million a movie in 2014 in the US and Canada while the "least family-friendly" movies with the "most offensive, obscene or anti-family, immoral content" averaged only about $US17.59 million and R-rated movies averaged only $US17.67 million.

The study also found that movies released in 2015 with no sex, no explicit nudity and no foul language averaged more money than movies which had such content – with similar findings in home video sales.

The findings were based on an extensive study of movies released by Hollywood studios which earnt at least $750,000.

Dr Ted Baehr, founder and published of Movieguide, said the evidence was "abundantly clear". "Moviegoers greatly prefer family-friendly movies."

Dr Baehr said most people wanted to see good triumph over evil, truth triumph over falsehood, justice over injustice, liberty over tyranny and beauty over ugliness. "They would also like to take their whole family, including their grandparents, to the movies more often."
