More than 1,000 dead in India’s floods – reports

More than 1,000 people have reportedly died as a result of floods in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand while thousands still remain stranded.

The flooding has been caused by early monsoon rains, believed to be the heaviest in 80 years. Rescue and relief efforts have been hindered by damage the floods and mudslides have done to roads.

Danny Punnose, of mission organisation Gospel for Asia, told Mission Network News, the flooding is “one of the worst severe floodings in a very, very long time.”

Mr Punnose said farmers had “pretty much lost everything” as a result of the floods and added that there were no concerns about people consuming contaminated water.
