Hundreds of Christians will be heading to Washington, DC, over the next week to take part in 90 continuous hours of Bible reading.

Starting with Genesis 1:1, volunteers will begin reading the Bible at 6pm on Sunday night outside the west front of the US Capitol and read continuously until noon on Thursday, by which time the entire Bible will have been read.

This is the 27th year the US Capitol Bible Reading Marathon has been held. According to organisers, the event serves to "honour the Bible, celebrate religious freedom and unite the diverse branches of Christianity around the Bible".

Some 100 English and foreign language versions of the Bible will be available to read.
