18th June, 2015

US author, missionary, broadcaster and teacher Elisabeth Elliot has died at the age of 88.

The daughter of US missionaries to Belgium, Ms Elliot went with her husband Jim to Ecuador in 1953 as missionaries to evangelise to an unreached tribe of Auca Indians.

It was here that Jim Elliot and four other men were killed in 1956. Elisabeth, who was then caring for her 10-month-old daughter Valerie, continued her work as missionary for two years after her husband”s death.

After her experiences in Ecuador, Ms Elliot went on to write Though the Gates of Splendor (1957) and Shadow of the Almighty (1958).

She remarried – to Addison Leitch – after her permanent return to the US in 1963 but Leitch died from cancer just four years later. She married her third husband, Lars Gren, in 1977.

Ms Elliot later wrote more than 20 other books and hosted a radio broadcast, Gateway to Joy, as well as becoming a sought-after public speaker and teaching a course on Christian living.

Ms Elliot died in the early hours of 15th June.
