New online book helps explain Sustainable Development Goals for churches

The World Council of Churches and various Christian groups have published a new book aimed at helping churches and Christian groups grapple with the UN Sustainability Development Goals.

The Sustainability Book

The Sustainability Book, publication of which was funded by Norad, features explantions of the 17 goals as well as Biblical reflections and resources to help churches grapple with the issues raised.

“In this book, we invite you to reflect on what the Bible and Christian faith have to say about the various SDGs,” writes the editors Anne Marte Skaland and Guro Almås. “These are not new issues for the Church, but the SDGs can give us new angles, new allies and new approaches.”

They writes it’s their hope that The Sustainability Book “will help you translate great visions into concrete action and see the big picture behind seemingly small, everyday actions”.

“The combination of facts, Biblical reflections, questions and prayers will allow you to use this book as a resource in sermons, Bible study groups, confirmation teachings and devotions.”

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are designed to be a spur to progress in areas including global poverty and hunger to health, gender equality, education and environmental sustainability and have a deadline of 2030. They were adopted by UN member states in 2015 as a follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals.

The book, which is available as a free download, was published by the WCC, Norwegian Church Aid, Christian Council of Norway, World YWCA, Church of Norway, Digni, Samarbeid menighet og misjon, and ACT Alliance.
