Dr Wiersbe, known to many as the “pastor’s pastor”, was a prolific speaker and author who wrote more than 150 books but who is perhaps best-known for his ‘Be’ series of Bible commentaries. He died on 2nd May in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Born in Indiana in 1929, Wiersbe was ordained as a Baptist pastor in 1951 and served at Central Baptist Church in Lombard, Illinois, leaving in 1957 to serve as director of the literature division of Youth For Christ International.

In 1961, Wiersbe became pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Covington in Kentucky – a post he would hold for 10 years, before, in 1971, he became the senior pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago.

In 1980, he joined Back to the Bible Radio Ministries in Nebraska. Wiersbe also served in various roles at teaching institutions and on the board of the Slavic Gospel Association.

Wiersbe’s grandson, Don Jacobsen – himself a pastor, described his grandfather as a “bridge builder” – a title Wiersbe used in his 1995 autobiography Be Myself: Memoirs of a Bridgebuilder – in a blog post published shortly after Wiersbe’s death.

“Grandpa built bridges from the world of the Bible to the world of today so that we could get to the other side of glory in Jesus,” he wrote.
