Salvation Army appeals for funding for response to Townsville floods in Australia

The Salvation Army has launched a new appeal for those affected by the floods in the far north of the Australian state of Queensland as well as those affected by bushfires in other states.

In Townsville, which is experiencing its worst flooding on record, hundreds of homes have been inundated by floodwaters and some 200 people still remain in evacuation centres. Two people have reportedly died in the floods.

The Salvation Army, which announced on Wednesday it had released $1 million for relief efforts, has launched an appeal so Australians can give cash donations to aid those affected as it prepares to move its efforts from “response” to “recovery”.

Lt Colonel David Godkin, leader of the Salvation Army in Queensland, described the flooding emergency as a “time of high stress” and said the “Salvos” were “thankful to be in a position where we can support, listen and care for them”.

“We know from experience that when a disaster of this magnitude hits, it takes many months, even years, to recover,” he said. “The Salvation Army is committed to standing alongside communities in Townsville for the long haul. We will work with other agencies to provide financial assistance, counselling and case management – journeying with individuals and families to provide personalised support for as long as it takes.”

Bushfires, meanwhile, have caused significant property damage in Tasmania where firefighters welcomed rain overnight. Fires have also caused property damage in Victoria in recent days.

To donate to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Appeal call 13 72 58 or visit www.salvos.org.au/emergency. Donations can also be made at any Woolworths supermarket. Woolworths has already donated $250,000 to the appeal.
