More than 220 killed as tsunami strikes parts of Indonesia

At least 222 people have died and hundreds more been injured in Indonesia after a tsunami struck parts of Java and Sumatra following an underwater landslide caused by an erupting volcano.

Officials were quoted as saying the disaster resulted from volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau and that with many affected areas still out of communication, the death toll may rise.

The tsunami struck around 9.30pm Saturday night forcing thousands to evacuate to higher ground. Along with hundreds of homes, hotels were among the damaged buildings. The west coast region on Banten province in Java was said to be the worst hit area.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered government agencies to respond quickly.

“My deep condolences to the victims in Banten and Lumpung provinces,” he was reported as saying. “Hopefully, those who are left have patience.”
