Gunman kills four and then himself in Brazilian cathedral

Four people have died after a gunman opened fire in a Brazilian Catholic cathedral on Tuesday before turning the weapon on himself.

The incident took place at a Catholic cathedral in the city of Campinas, about 100 kilometres north of Sao Paulo.

The gunman reportedly entered the cathedral and sat down among mainly elderly worshippers who were praying after Mass before suddenly standing up and opening fire.

Police responded after hearing shots from outside and the gunman was hit in the side as he ran to the altar before he shot himself in the head.

At least four people were reportedly injured in the attack. A motive has not been established.

The Archdiocese of Campinas asked for prayer for all affected in a Facebook post.

Brazil has the highest number of homicides in the world, recording more than 63,000 last year alone, but mass shootings are reportedly rare.
