Tens of thousands to pray for poor and vulnerable at UK’s national day of prayer and worship

Tens of thousands of Christians will descend on London’s Wembley Stadium tomorrow for a National Day of Prayer and Worship.

Among those who will be prayed for will be the one in seven people who go to bed hungry every night despite there being enough food in the world for everyone.

Tearfund’s director of integral mission, David Westlake, says that those at the event will pray for “some of the world’s poorest communities – families, widows and orphans – for whom hunger is a daily reality”.

“As Christians we have a responsibility to challenge the injustices of hunger and poverty, and prayer is an incredibly powerful way to do that.”

Meanwhile, Simon Barrington, Samaritan’s Purse UK’s executive director, will lead a time of prayer for the children in over 105 countries who will be receiving shoeboxes as part of Operation Christmas Child this year.

“We’re also coming together to praise God and celebrate all that’s been done through the 94 million acts of compassion that have been carried out through Operation Christmas Child over the last 22 years,” he says.

“Each one of these shoeboxes is an opportunity to share God’s love and for Churches overseas to point children to Jesus Christ as their saviour at Christmas.”

“Our hope is that those gathered at Wembley will be challenged and inspired to continue to be praying for and acting on behalf of those who are orphaned, living in poverty and disease and victims of trafficking.”

Aimed at Christians of all denominations, the National Day of Prayer and Worship at Wembley Stadium will feature artists including Matt Redman, Lara Martin, Tim Hughes, and Hillsong London.

Organisers say the day is likely to be the “single biggest mobilisation of Christians for prayer for a generation” in the UK.
