The Sermon on the Mount is the greatest moral manifesto in history. In it, Jesus tackles the moral issues of his day: adultery, murder, divorce.
In the Biblical account of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus lifts the bar “so high we are all below it”, says Paul Clark. PICTURE: Aaron Burden/Unsplash
Jesus does the opposite of expectations. He doesn’t lower standards, He raises them higher than anyone can maintain.
“You think murder is wrong – I say if you have been angry at your brother you are guilty.”
What would Jesus say about marriage? “You think heterosexual marriage is good enough. I say unless your marriage reflects the love between Jesus and the church it’s a fail.”
As humans we want to sit above a line and look down on others so we feel OK. Jesus draws the line so high we are all below it.
We have nothing left to do but throw ourselves into the arms of grace. Do we have enough grace for others?
