Marriage – keep choosing

I’ve been happily married now for 25 years. What have I learnt that I can share with you?

chose my wife 25 years ago. Quite publicly. Forsaking all others. As long as we both shall live.

It’s a decision I have to keep making. Sometimes yearly, sometimes daily. When she annoys me. When I annoy her. When I find someone else attractive or interesting, or interested in me.

I chose Becky. Sometimes I feel it and it’s easy. Sometimes I don’t feel it and I chose her anyway.

That’s love. Knowing that someone will keep choosing you as your beauty fades. When you’re an idiot. When your jokes are old. It’s an act of the will. I chose Becky. Forsaking all others. That’s what I do, because I want to be loved like that.
