Marriage – equal?

I’ve been happily married for 25 years this year. What have I learnt that I can share with you?

You have to marry your equal. Your best friend. And you have to see them as that.

Now, of course you’re not actually equal. You’re taller, she’s smarter. You’re stronger, she’s more caring. You tell dad jokes, she’s actually funny.

But you have to treat one another as equals. Work out your strengths. Play to them. Just because you’re not the same, doesn’t mean you don’t have equal status – something our society sometimes finds hard to understand.

In a marriage, it’s you and your partner taking on the world. The world is a hard place. The world is out to get you. If you’re not together, you’ll come apart.
