I’m intrigued by atheists who have a go at religion and declare: “If people just treated other people as they wanted to be treated, that’s all we need”. They declare this as if it was a given, natural law, we don’t need God for.

The reality is, the ancient world had a definition of natural law – “everything in its place”. They looked at the world and saw – the deer eats the grass, the lion eats the deer – natural law.
Therefore, the weak worked the land, the strong were in charge and lived off their sweat, even put them in chains. Natural law.
It took Jesus to change all this. He made the golden rule the new standard – treat other people as you want to be treated – turning ‘natural law’ on its head.
Atheists are directly quoting Jesus when they declare this. What irony!
