The early chapters of Genesis are some of the most sublime in Western literature.
God created the universe with words – information, coded data, says Paul Clark. PICTURE: Steve Halama/Unsplash
Philosophically, Genesis offers arguably the best explanation for human nature – why are we a devastating mix of good and evil?
Genesis argues our goodness comes from being made in the image of God, who is the very source of goodness.
Meanwhile, our flawed nature is the result of rebellion. A conscious choice not to trust God, but to rely on our own self – which by definition – puts self first and is blind to the needs of others.
How else do we explain our broken nature? A nature that has not changed despite thousands of years of education, progress, technology and discovery; a nature that is at its worst when it believes it has overcome its fatal flaw.
While Genesis explains its origins, the Gospels, fortunately, describe its solution.
