MUSIC: NAARAH TELLS HER OWN TALES IN THE STORY

VIC CAMPBELL reports…

As lead singer for Nashville-based Aussie rock band Alabaster Box, Naarah has shared songs with thousands of people. For 10 years or more, she has performed in churches, at festivals and in concerts throughout Australia and North America.

This young woman has experienced the joys and sorrows of life on the road; she has heard stories from scores of people motivated to share with her after hearing her sing; she has enjoyed life as a wife and a mother.

“One thing I really want to encourage through this album is that we can learn and encourage each other from our own stories if we’re willing to share.  We can unite on this and we can carry each other’s burdens.”

With the release of her first solo album The Story, Naarah has begun to share significant aspects of her own life story with those willing to listen.

The album offers 11 songs in which this seasoned performer reflects on her life experiences in an attempt to offer encouragement to others.

In the album’s liner notes she writes: “The songs I have written are not only part of my life story, but are stories of hope and salvation within reach of everyone who is willing to grab hold of it.”

Naarah’s stories are not those of a jaded rock singer; nor are they superficial tales of triumph and victory. In sharing something of her personal journey, she makes herself vulnerable, but never becomes maudlin. Her songs offer the listener hope while recognising that life can sometimes be a struggle.

Musically, The Story allows Naarah to experiment a little. While the album retains a soft pop/rock edge, the inclusion of strings adds colour and depth to her heartfelt lyrics.

“Each song is really personal,” says Naarah.  “With each song, I just want to draw people in and hopefully encourage them in their own life.”

The title track sets the tone for the whole album. It is basically the story of Jesus told in a musically creative and lyrically engaging manner.  In just over four minutes, Naarah manages to sketch out the life of Christ with its elements of hope, light, pain and forgiveness all bathed in a respectful “holy” aura.

The song Stay incorporates the evergreen sentiments of Psalm 23, assuring the listener of God’s presence and support through times of trial. It is a song with special significance for Naarah.

“I was kind of frustrated with not hearing God’s voice audibly as I’m sure many of us desire to,” she says. “And I was a bit frustrated at the circumstances around me, but as I read Psalm 23 and began to put it into a song, I felt myself fighting again and becoming fearless. I wanted to sing this song as fighting words against fear and doubt in my life. I really hope that others can grab a hold of that and sing it out loud, whether it be in the car or at home and shout out those words that are so faithful.”

While violin and cello create melancholy sounds on tracks such as Deep In My Heart and Lamentations, Naarah still communicates a solid faith and belief in her God’s ability to sustain her regardless of circumstances.

“One of my favourite Bible passages is from Lamentations chapter three,” declares Naarah. “In verses 22 and 24, it says ‘Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed because his compassions fail not.’ Even when we are desperate, we can find our hope in God.”

“One thing I really want to encourage through this album is that we can learn and encourage each other from our own stories if we’re willing to share.  We can unite on this and we can carry each other’s burdens.”

“In laying my life and my heart out on the table through the songs on this album, in sharing my experiences, my laughter and my tears, I want to encourage others in their own relationship with God. I really pray that this album will encourage people and stir something new within themselves again to create a change in their life and to maybe even ignite a fire in their heart for God that cannot be quenched.”
