DAVID ADAMS reports on the odder side of life…

• Ever since Willy Wonka has the golden ticket carried a fascination for us – and now a US chocolate company has become the latest to cash in on the idea. Vermont’s Tavenier Chocolates has reportedly put three golden tickets inside chocolate bar wrappers but the prize, sadly, isn’t chocolate or a factory tour – rather it’s a year’s free parking in the town of Brattleboro where the factory is based. The competition only runs until 14th May and the tickets are hidden inside three of 1,000 of the company’s bars.
• State-run media outlets in Tajikistan will have to find some more time in news bulletins. A BBC report says a new law came into force recently which means journalists in state run news organisations have to refer to the nation’s President Emomali Rahmon by his full title – “The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon”. There is apparently some leeway with permission for journalists to refer to him simply as Leader of the Nation if necessary. Naturally, the decision has led to the president being given a few other names on social media outlets.
• And this week’s odd food? Black icecream, which has apparently caused a social media storm after it went on sale at a US dessert shop. The soft-serve ice-cream, on sale at Little Damage ice cream parlour in LA, is apparently made from the charred remains of a coconut shell mixed with coconut flakes, coconut milk and coconut cream, all served in a black waffle cone. And to spice it up a bit, colorful toppings can be added. The original flavour is called Almond Charcoal but further dark flavours are also being worked on including Black Roses (above).
