STRANGESIGHTS: LARRY THE MOUSER STAYS PUT; A MUSEUM OF ICE CREAM; AND, DRONE BOWLING?…

Larry the Cat

DAVID ADAMS writes about the odder side of life…

Larry the Cat

David Cameron may have left 10 Downing Street – the London residence of the UK’s Prime Minister – and Theresa May moved in but one constant remains – Larry, the official Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, is staying right where he is. Larry’s is a rags to riches story – the brown and white tabby arrived in early 2011, rescued from the world famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in South London. While he’s had something of an on-again/off-again relationship with media over the following years (there’s been allegations of scratching reporters made in the past), he was spotted briefly in front of Number 10 as the press waited for Mr Cameron’s departure this week. PICTURE: UK Government.

It seems these days there’s a museum for everything and joyfully, albeit briefly, there will be a pop-up Museum of Ice Cream opening in New York City for just a couple of days at the end of the month. Curated by a “collective of ice cream obsessed designers, artists, and friends”, the museum will apparently feature a swimmable ‘rainbow sprinkle pool’, edible balloons, an immersive chocolate room and a massive ice-cream sundae as well as an ice-cream sandwich swing, an ice-cream scooper seesaw and, of course, exclusive tastings. Sounds like fun and let’s hope it doesn’t melt too soon.

New technologies inevitably lead to new sports – although we’re not sure this one will catch on. A Canadian man has invented what he calls “drone bowling” which involves using a drone to knock down a stack of empty cans. Apparently the wind can run interference, however (stacking those cans is a pain), so there’s clearly still some aspects of the sport to be worked out.

Our Odd Churches feature will return next week.
