US President Barack Obama is in Australia for a whirlwind visit. On Wednesday he and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced plans to station 2,500 US marines in Darwin as part of America's military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The first 200 to 250 marines will arrive in Darwin next year in what is the largest US deployment in Australia since World War II, building up to a force of 2,500 by 2017.
