YOUR SAY: TONY ABBOTT ELECTED AS FEDERAL OPPOSITION LEADER

2nd December, 2009

Australia has a new Federal Opposition leader this week after a spill saw Tony Abbott elected ahead of Joe Hockey and the former leader Malcolm Turnball. Some have suggested it represents a turning point for the Liberal party. What are your thoughts on the changes?

I think the Liberals are completely out of touch with the majority of Australians. Their only talent (Costello) has got out, and the rest are drowning in shallow water.

They should pack it in. Close shop. Call it quits. Then the sitting Liberals can retire or move to other parties: the hyper-conservatives should join the Nationals (and happily keep on denying that our weather is changing...); the normal conservatives should join their friends in the Labor party and be the "real" conservative party in the country, and a few of them (the absolute dinasaurs) should just retire. Then... then!.. we will have a nice clear and easy to follow political landscape:

Greens left of centre, Labor right of centre, Nationals right of them, and all the little parties sprinkled over the horizon like frekkles on a kids birthday cake. (You know: the Socialist alliance on the far left; One Nation on the far right; What women want between Green and Labor; Family First between Labor and National....)

It is time for the Liberals to dissolve. Their existence muddies the waters. While they are there, people don't realise how conservative the Labor Party is. It is time for some clarity! ;-)

Who would have thought...didn't see that one coming, wondering if Julie Bishop is next in line? Although I do agree with some of Mr Abbotts policies, not leadership material.

Bob Hawke's description of Tony Abbot ... only 'temporary'. Well, I hope it is. A bit like sheep needing a shepherd! Say, where's that sheepdog?
