"I think it's going to be a lower number, much lower than the 10,000. That 10,000 was based at a time when we didn't know what we didn't know," Army Lieutenant General Russell Honore told CNN.

"From talking to the city officials and communicating with the parish presidents, I think intuitively we were saying that number will be much lower."

The death toll officially passed 400 on Sunday with 211 confirmed killed in Mississippi, 154 dead in Louisiana, and fatalities in Alabama and Florida.

Around a million people have been displaced as a result of the hurricane with tens of thousands still living in temporary shelter.

New Orleans , which was once home to about 450,000 people, is now largely deserted as rescuers conduct house-to-house searches looking for survivors and bodies. Authorities are also preparing to spray the area to prevent the transmission of disease by flies and mosquitoes.

US authorities have previously said they believe the city will have to be abandoned for as long as nine months.

WHAT TO PRAY FOR:

• That those who have suffered the loss of a loved one will experience the peace found only in Jesus;

• That Christians will be granted wisdom and discernment by God to know how best to respond to those who have experienced such losses;

• That those in life-threatening situations will be discovered and helped;

• That limited emergency response resources will be used wisely;

• Protection for rescue workers and for emotional physical strength and stamina.
