BOOKS: THE CASE FOR CHRIST

7th February , 2004

TONY TOWNSEND on a book he says digs deep in an investigation into Christianity...

Lee Strobel, The Case for Christ. Zondervan Publishing House.

Tracing his life from a legal editor working at the Chicago Tribune with a strong skepticism towards Christianity to a teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church, Lee Strobels’ The Case for Christ is his personal examination of the claims of Jesus Christ.

Motivated by his wife’s life-changing conversion to Christianity, Strobel’s book is about a two year journey which he describes as “an all-out investigation into the facts surrounding the case for Christianity”. It is a journey which eventually brings him to Jesus Christ.

Strobel's investigation leads him to interview 13 leading Biblical scholars and academics about the claims of Christianity and the most common objections towards it, covering topics such as the credibility of the New Testament writers to the evidence of the resurrection to evidence of Christ's deity.

These people not only offer solid evidence for Christianity on an intellectual level but they share how Jesus Christ has impacted their lives personally.

This book is more than a theological apologetic work, it also carries a real personal touch in the way it is presented, highlighting Strobel’s willingness not to accept these 13 scholars' claims at face value but to scrutinize their every statement about Jesus Christ

After reading this book, I believe you will come away enriched with a greater understanding about Jesus Christ both the person and his accomplishments. The book is useful for the Christian, those seeking to know more about Jesus or the skeptic.

PAKISTANI CHRISTIANS SERVING IN THE MIDST OF CONFLICT

BishopPakistani Christian communities confronted with the presence of the Taliban and Al-Qaida serve their Muslim neighbors in an unfriendly environment. Christians in the North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan find themselves in the midst of a complex conflict involving regional and global powers. With Pakistani government security forces fighting Taliban from within the country and Al-Qaida militants from beyond it, the border to Afghanistan is not much more than a demarcation line on the map. In the mountainous landscape extremists can roam freely. Add in cross border strikes from US military based in Afghanistan and it is hard to know who is who in the very tense situation.

    THOUGHTS ON LIFE:

CHRISTMAS WASTE ANOTHER REFLECTION OF OUR CONSUMERIST LIFESTYLE

In Australia this Christmas, we spent $1 billion on unwanted presents. This further illustrates our society’s addiction to buying presents just for the heck of it at Christmas. As usual, the Murdoch press encourages people to have a whinge by prompting readers to tell them all about any shocker Christmas gifts they received. Thankfully only a couple of people have responded at the time of writing this post, and one of those was thankful for what they received.

Just Been ThinkingJUST BEEN THINKING: I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT CHRISTMAS

I’ve been thinking about Christmas a lot… As you do at Christmas!!

I’ve been thinking about sacred spaces. You know, the memory places and iconic activities knitted into times such as Christmas, Easter, birthdays etc.

I am very protective of those places inside. Each year I try to create some space for those activities and thoughts to influence me spiritually. Do you?
