POETRY - THE MAN IN THE OLD CLOTHES

6th June, 2012

JESSICA COLLINS

I see you on the street

In your old clothes

With a glazed look in your eyes

You ask me for money

For food

And accommodation

I say no to giving you money

And offer to buy you food

But it seems to be the money you want

I say no

To giving you money

So you call me heartless

God am I heartless?

I want to help

I feel so overwhelmed

What can I do to help people

Addicted to drugs?

And out on the street?

 I know I’m not heartless

Because You gave me this heart

And You live inside of me

I know I’m not heartless

Because I feel for that man

In his old clothes who asked me for money

I guess the thing is

I can’t buy him food

If it’s money he wants

But I can’t give him money

I don’t know what he may spend it on

I can pray for him though

I can give to Melbourne City Mission

And the Salvation Army

And church

And pray that maybe

That man might find You God

And that You would bring him out of the place he is in
